Dell Technologies and independent AI research company Imbue have entered a $150 million agreement to build a high-performance computing cluster for training AI models optimized for reasoning. Imbue is already using the cluster to train AI models and develop prototype agents that can correct bugs in code and analyze lengthy documents. The goal is to create more capable, trustworthy AI agents that don't require constant supervision, potentially enabling tasks such as planning vacations for users.
ByteDance has launched a new version of its online collaboration tool, Feishu, now integrated with AI to aid workplace automation. The AI bot, Feishu Intelligent Buddy, can generate emails, analyze PDFs, and help with other office tasks. The move is part of a broader trend among tech giants, including Tencent and Alibaba, to incorporate AI into their office suites.
Google has launched Gemini, its latest large language model, aiming to compete with OpenAI's GPT-4. Gemini is more than a single AI model, with versions designed for Android devices, Google AI services, and data centers. Google claims Gemini outperforms GPT-4 in 30 out of 32 benchmarks, particularly in understanding and interacting with video and audio. Gemini's capabilities will be tested by everyday users, with coding identified as a key application. Google also highlights Gemini's efficiency, as it is faster and cheaper to run than previous models.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has committed to prioritizing Japan's needs for artificial intelligence processors amid high market demand. This announcement comes as Japan is working to rebuild its semiconductor infrastructure and catch up on AI technology development. The commitment follows Japan's recent budget allocation of about ¥2 trillion ($13.60 billion) for chip investment, some of which is expected to support chipmaker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. and chip foundry venture Rapidus.
SpaceX plans to sell shares next month at the same valuation of $150 billion as in summer 2023. This comes despite the company's Starlink unit struggling to meet profit goals. The upcoming tender offer suggests that Elon Musk is not considering a near-term IPO for Starlink. Despite reports of a possible Starlink IPO as early as late 2024, Musk has denied such plans. Starlink, which accounts for most of SpaceX's value, reported $1.4 billion in revenue and a loss in 2022, falling short of investor expectations.
NASA and SpaceX may test orbital refueling technology on the next Starship test flight, a crucial step for future lunar missions. The test would involve transferring super-cold propellant from one tank to another inside a Starship spacecraft, a precursor to more complex demonstrations. This is part of NASA's efforts in cryogenic fluid management, which involves maintaining propellants at cryogenic temperatures and transferring them from one vehicle to another. However, no final decisions on timing have been made. Other companies, including Lockheed Martin, United Launch Alliance, and Eta Space, are also working on cryogenic fluid management, with flight demonstrations expected in the coming years.
Opal Security, a company that automates identity access management, has raised $22 million in a Series B funding round. The funds will be used to double the team size, enhance customer support, and develop new visualization and AI-powered tools to manage identity and access risk. Despite a downturn in the cybersecurity market, Opal has seen a 4x increase in annual recurring revenue since its Series A round in June 2022.
Elon Musk's AI startup xAI has launched its Grok AI chatbot for X platform Premium+ subscribers in the US, with plans to roll out to all English-speaking X users soon and other languages in early 2024. Grok, described as an "anti-woke" chatbot, is designed to avoid the political correctness seen in other chatbots. Despite Musk's claims of Grok having access to more up-to-date information than GPT models, critics argue that other chatbots can also crawl the web for real-time information. xAI is currently seeking investments of up to one billion US dollars.
Beeper, a startup that brought iMessage to Android users, is experiencing an outage due to Apple cutting off its access. Beeper CEO, Eric Migicovsky, stated that all data indicates Apple's action is the cause. Migicovsky argues that Beeper Mini increased security for iPhone users by allowing encrypted chats with Android users. However, Apple views iMessage as a key tool for locking in users to its ecosystem and has no reason not to shut down Beeper Mini. The future of Beeper Mini is uncertain.
